Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee. Scrutiny committees question decisions and can recommend changes. They don't make the decision.
Anti-Poverty Strategy 2025-2028
The committee made nine comments and recommendations, as recorded in the minute. It recommended more detail on credit unions in the final report, covering how they can help people manage money, avoid high-interest payday loans and support people struggling with Council Tax. It recommended that all relevant council departments are actively engaged with the strategy. It recommended that the final report uses clear language, with a full explanation of acronyms and technical terms such as the Marmot Principles. It requested a progress report presented twice more before the end of this council term, with evidence of what has been achieved, how actions have progressed, challenges faced, areas of significant impact and next steps. It requested current data on deprivation in each Newport ward, to identify priority areas. It requested that the Head of Housing and Communities approach Registered Social Landlords (housing associations) about what they hold on households in poverty in Newport. It recommended a more detailed homelessness section in the action plan, covering prevention and support for people who are homeless or in temporary accommodation. It requested that the service area consider dedicated contact points for residents seeking support, such as a dedicated phone line. It suggested inviting Registered Social Landlord representatives to the committee meeting on 24 April 2025, when the Corporate Safeguarding report will be considered, to discuss actions they can take to help with corporate safeguarding.

Items are linked when their titles share most of their words and they fall within 18 months of each other. Councils don't number reports across meetings, so a few links may be wrong, and a step may be missing if its title changed a lot. Each step links to the meeting, where the council's own papers are.
