Council Tax discount for self-catering properties
Cabinet approved Option One, a discretionary discount for self-catering units moving from the Business Rates list (for business premises) to the Council Tax list, and recommended that Council adopt it. The discount removes the 75% premium on periodically occupied properties for the backdated liability period, with an effective date of 1 April 2026. Cabinet also recommended that Council meet the cost of the discount from a £1.2 million provision set aside to cover possible loss of billed income from self-catering units.

Council Tax discount for self-catering properties
Council approved a discretionary Council Tax discount for self-catering units that move from business rates to Council Tax. It removes the 75% premium for the backdated period from 1 April 2023, and owners who have already paid the premium will receive a refund. The cost, estimated at £1.0 million, will come from a £1.2 million provision set aside for income that may not be collected. The vote was 44 in favour, none against and 1 abstention.
Items are linked when their titles share most of their words and they fall within 18 months of each other. Councils don't number reports across meetings, so a few links may be wrong, and a step may be missing if its title changed a lot. Each step links to the meeting, where the council's own papers are.
