Hayley Jones, Infant Class teacher, Ysgol Glan Gele provided Conwy SACRE Members with a presentation in relation to Agreed Syllabus Supplementary Material for Schools. The following points were highlighted: • The Humanities Area of Learning Team had reviewed the material in order to extract the information that was relevant for the school. • The material was being used to plan for the new curriculum. • The Humanities Area of Learning would be met primarily with topic based activities in order to focus on the ‘what matters’ statements and to ensure the inclusion of Religion, Values and Ethics (RVE). • Each ‘what matters’ statement was broken down in order to show how they were being met. • Broad topics would be utilised in order that all ‘what matters’ statements and RVE concepts were met. • The guidance provided a useful reference to the ‘what matters’ statements and clarity in respect of each lens. • Guidance was provided in respect of the new curriculum. The RVE Consultant advised that the Agreed Syllabus, along with the supplementary material would be published on the Conwy County Borough Council website. The Agreed Syllabus, along with the supplementary material would also be shared with the Welsh Government, who would hold the documents for reference. The following was discussed: • It was queried as to the status of secondary schools opting in to the implementation of the new curriculum. Clarification was also sought on whether Religious Education (RE) would remain as a standalone subject. - In response, the RVE Consultant advised that secondary schools would be implementing the Curriculum for Wales for year 7 in September 2022, unless they had chosen to opt out. If they had opted out, they would be required to implement for years 7 and 8 in 2023. - According to regional figures, approximately 50% of schools had opted out. - Secondary schools were still required to teach RE, this would gradually become RVE as it was rolled out on a year by year basis, beginning with year 7 in 2022. - The right of withdrawal would still be appropriate for RE (for years 8 and above) but wouldn’t be appropriate for RVE. - RVE was a mandatory aspect of the new curriculum that could sit within the Humanities area of learning or could be cross curricular. RESOLVED: a) That the Agreed Syllabus Supplementary Material be published in order to support schools’ curriculum development. That a letter be sent to School advising them of the publication of the Agreed Syllabus Supplementary Material.
Councillors must say when they have a personal link to something being discussed, such as a job, a property or a family member. A prejudicial interest is one strong enough that the councillor usually leaves the room and takes no part.
